Hello.
I know that the current script doesn't allow 2 identical files to exist, but it should. It would be nice to use the file server's free space to store copies of files. This will make possible to make load balancing by redirecting the download to the best server at the time. It would also provide redundancy and may remove the need of raid arrays.
I'm not a big fan of raid 5 so I use raid 1 on all my servers. It would be better to not use any raid and have 2 copies of each file on different servers. This will provide no downtime at all if one server fails and you won’t need to rebuild raid arrays when a hard drive fails. By removing a server in the admin area, the script itself may start to duplicate the files again in other servers. Many datacenters doesn’t charge or limit local traffic.
It will also be possible to have the same file in different servers in different locations and redirecting the user to the closest server. This would be very useful for companies connected to IXPs. On our office for example we have connections to 2 majors IXPs. We don't host sites or files on our office but we would if we could use only the IXPs links since our transit contract is quite expensive.
